In this video you will learn how to adjust thread tension.

It is very important to balance the thread tension between the bobbin thread and needle thread.

To check if the tension is adequate, hold the thread and hang the bobbin case.

When shaken lightly, the thread should unwind itself only by the weight of the bobbin case.

TIGHT:

If the bobbin thread tension is high, the bobbin case will not come down when the thread is shaken because the bobbin screw is tight.

In this case, turn the thread tension screw on the bobbin case anticlockwise.

Anti-clockwise = lower thread tension

LOOSE:

If the bobbin thread tension is low, the bobbin case will come down smoothly when the thread is shaken because the bobbin screw is loose.

In this case, turn the thread tension screw on the bobbin case clockwise.

Clockwise = higher thread tension

NORMAL:

Before Stitching, rotate the tension nut and stop just before the end of the screw.

When pulling the thread, you will feel a slight resistance.

Start stitching.

If the tension is properly adjusted, the fabric will not bunch up and both the threads will interlace symmetrically

Cut the remaining bit of the thread.

TIGHT:

When the nut is rotated to the limit that it compresses the tension spring, the needle thread tension is high.

In this case the thread will be tight while pulling, just like the bobbin case.

Try to stitch when both the threads have a high tension

It will result in wrinkles and even holes on the fabric.

LOOSE:

When the nut is rotated anti-clockwise till it hides the end of the screw, the needle thread tension is low.

In this case the thread will be loose while pulling, just like the bobbin case

Try to stitch when both the threads have a low tension.

If the needle thread tension is low, loops will be formed under the fabric.

If the needle thread tension is low and the bobbin thread tension is high,

the stitch will be normal, if adjusted properly. And vice-versa.

Note: Not adjusting the tension properly may spoil your fabric and break the needle.

You have now learned to adjust the thread tension.
