In this video you will learn how to stitch the hem of a Salwar.

We shall apply a firm finish to the hem by running multiple stitch lines along it.

Watch the previous video to learn how to gather fabric.

Before we can join the two sides of the Salwar along the inseams, we need to first stitch a hem around the leg holes.

To do this, place the legs of the Salwar on the table and fold the raw edge at the end of the leg along the notch marking the hemline.

Finger press along the fold to set a crease.

Now, tuck the raw end of the fabric inward to make a double fold, as shown.

Secure this fold with a series of pins.

Repeat the same process on the other layer as well.

Now, set the edge of the fold under the needle and start sewing along the hem.

Don’t forget to apply a reverse stitch at both ends.

Remove the pins one by one as they approach the needle.

Ensure that the fold is secured by the stitches from end to end.

Cut the thread and repeat the steps on the second layer of fabric.

Repeat the process on the other side.

We shall now apply a series of stitches parallel to the first one, in order to provide stiffness and a decorative finish to the hem.

With a quarter of an inch gap, start sewing below the first stitch line.

Make a third stitch below the second one and so on till you’ve secured the very edge of the leg hole.

Here, we have made a series of six lines of parallel stitches along the hem.

Repeat the process on the hem of the second leg.

Repeat the process on the other leg.

You have now learnt how to stitch the hem of a Salwar.

Watch the next video to learn how to stitch the inseams.
