In this video, you will learn how to stitch a hem for a Top.

The Hem protects the raw edge of the garment, while giving it a neat finish.

To learn how to stitch the side seams and finish the slits, watch the previous video.

Start by spreading out the garment on the table with the wrong side out.

Fold in the raw edge between the notches marking the hemline towards the wrong side of the fabric and finger press the fold to set a crease.

Now, make a double fold with the hem allowance, as shown.

Secure the fold by attaching pins at regular intervals, all along the hem.

Once this is done, repeat the same process on the other side of the garment.

Do the same for the other side.

Once all the pins are in place, set one end of the hem under the needle and start making a series stitches along the width of the fold.

When you reach the corner, with the needle still inserted, lift the presser foot and pivot the fabric by 90 degrees, before proceeding to sew along the length of the hem.

Remove the pins as they approach the needle.

When you reach the end of a hemline, pivot the fabric by 90 degrees.

Stitch along the width and off the bottom edge of the hem.

Cut the thread and repeat the process to stitch a hem on the other side.

Follow the same process on the other side.

Verify the stitch you have made to sure you have a uniform hem.

For a neat and flexible garment, make a series of cuts along both side seam allowances, making sure not to cut the stitch.

When this is done, turn out the right side of the garment.

You have now learnt how to make a top.

It’s time to try on your garment!.
