In this video, you will learn how to hit a two handed backhand.
In tennis, it is one of the most fundamental groundstrokes
The three key steps are the preparation, the shot and the follow through
Use the two handed backhand grip
The bottom hand grip is a continental grip or like a chopping or hammering grip, whereas the top hand holds the racket in theeastern or semi-western forehand grip
Do a split step and get into the ready position with legs slighlty apart and knees flexed
Turn the body by doing a unit turn with the dominant leg slightly in front and the dominant shoulder pointing to the net
The front foot should point diagonally so that you can twist the body easily
To turn, lift the dominant leg's heel off the ground and pivot on the other foot
Twist the upper body and transfer the weight to the backhand side foot
Do not use the hands to take the racket back at this stage
The racket head should be pointing upward with the strings in a neutral position, parallel to the alleys
The chin should be close to the front shoulder
As you prepare to hit the ball, your weight should be on your back foot, ready to transfer to your front foot
The shot
Drop the racket behind you and swing forward in a C movement, up and across
Relax your hand and let your racket head drop below the height of the ball just before transferring weight to your front foot, and step into the shot
Hit under the ball with a brushing effect to generate top spin
At contact, the arm should be extended and the ball should be in front and a little to the side of your front hip
Present firm wrists with the side of the racket perpendicualr to the ground
The follow through
Extend the racket through the strike zone as long as possible
Swing the racket across the opposite shoulder and step forward
The butt capp should point upward when you finish your stroke
After hitting the shot get back into the ready position to negotiate the next ball
Practice the two handed backhand stroke against the wall or with a partner
Enjoy your game
