In this video, you will learn how to hit a backhand overhead smash.
It is hit high and deep into the opponent's court when they are at the net
The lob can be used as a defensive or an offensive stroke
The three key steps are the preparation, the shot and the follow through
Step 1
The preparation
Use a continental grip
Hit an attacking shot and run up to the net
Be in the ready position, expecting a passing shot or a lob
Do a split step just before the opponent strikes the ball
When you see a lob coming your way, turn on the bakchnad side and do a couple of cross-over steps to get just a little behind the ball
Raise the racket behind and keep holding it with the non racket hand
Flex the knees as you load and get ready to smash
Step 2
The Shot
Drop the racket head behind so that the butt cap points to the ball
Unload, stretch up and swing the racket upward towards the ball
Snap the wrist and hit the ball
The contact should happen behind the ball
There should be a pull-back action in your backhand smash
You could turn your back to the opponent and take the racket leg off the ground to help you reach the ball
The general tendency would be to hit the ball cross-court
The contact happens behind and a little to the outer side of the ball
If you would like to hit down the line, the snap should be a little more exaggerated and slightly outward
The contact should be behind and on the upper half of the ball
The follow through
The backhand smash doesn't have much of a follow through
Be careful not to snap your wrist vigorously as you could hurt yourself
Land on both legs if you had to jump and get back to the ready position
Ask your friend to feed you lobs and practice your backhand smash
Enjoy your game
