Here we show you an easy exercise to stretch your shoulders with a friend, trainer, family member or carer.
We also have a shoulder stretching exercise video which can be done without any help from a workout partner. Find it, and all our other gentle exercise videos for older adults on our website - see the link below.
You'll need a chair and someone willing to help you out but the stretching exercise we present you here couldn't be easier and should increase the range of motion in your shoulder joints.

In this video you will discover an exercise to improve shoulder and chest flexibility with the help of a partner.
Check your physical fitness with a doctor before beginning
Practiced regularly, this exercise will allow you to increase the range of motion in your shoulders.
To do this exercise, you will need a chair.
This exercise is divided into two stages: positioning, then movement.
First, the positioning
As the older adult: Sit at the back of the chair and stretch your spine as you sit up straight
Lift the back of your head as high as possible, while tucking in your chin and looking in front of you.
Lift your arms up so that they are stretched out like the hands of a clock at 10 minutes past 10, palms towards the sky.
The partner should hold underneath the elbows of the older adults
Secondly, the movement
the partner will direct this movement with their hands.
Slowly and gently bring back the older adult's elbows.
Communicate between yourselves how it feels for the older adult in order to ensure they do not get hurt
As the assisted: Relax and let yourself be guided.
Breathe normally throughout the exercise
Hold the position for 30 seconds then release gently
Repeat the exercise a second time, with 15 seconds breaks between
As the days go by, you will see an increase in your range of motion
Over to you!
