In this video, you will learn how to throw a hook shot. The hook shot is very useful especially for the centers and power forwards around the key. It creates some space between the defender and the ball to avoid being countered.

To do a hook shot, follow these two steps: get into position and make the shot

First, the positioning,

Position yourself near the middle of the key, one or two metres from the basket

Your feet should be parallel to the backboard, spread about shoulder width with your knees bent

If you are shooting with your right hand, your left shoulder should be closest to the basket

Second, the shot

Use your foot which is closest to the basket to jump, bringing the ball up. Keep yours on the basket the whole time.

Slightly bend your arm with the shoulder tucked in.

Use your other arm to provide balance. It should not touch the ball

Let go of the ball at the highest point of your arm's movement, bending the wrist to give the ball some backspin

As with all shot your fingers should point towards the basket once you've released the ball

To really get to grips with the hook shot, try practising with a defender marking your to help you get used to protecting the ball as your shoot. Over to you!
