First aid: loss of consciousness

Loading comments ...

In this video you are going to learn how to administer first aid to someone who has lost consciousness

To find out whether they are breathing, ask them if they are OK and gently shake their shoulders

If they do not respond and if you are alone, call for help

Lay them on their back

Check their breathing by placing one hand on the casualty's forehead and your fingers from your other hand beneath the tip of their chin

Gently tilt their head backwards to raise their chin, in order to free their airways

Place you ear next to their mouth for around 10 seconds, and try to hear and feel their breath. Watch their chest to see if you can see breathing movements

Act according to the state of the casualty

If they are breathing, place them in the recovery position. Alert the emergency services, cover and monitor them until help arrives

If they are not breathing, alert or ask someone in the vicinity to alert the emergency services, and begin cardiopulmonary resuscitation, alternating 30 chest compressions with 2 rescue breaths

If you do not not know how to give mouth-to-mouth, only perform 30 chest compressions, at a rate of 2 per second
