How to Use a Random Orbital Sander.

In this video, you will learn how to use a random orbital sander.

A sander is a power tool used for the quick removal of material and to create a smooth, flat surface.

Always wear a dust mask, safety glasses and earmuffs when you use power tools.

Before handling power tools, read and follow all instructions for use, maintenance and safety provided by the manufacturer.

The random orbital sander has a motor that moves a disc in random patterns, a vent that blows dust, a power switch and a power cord.

Different grits of sandpaper can be attached onto the moving disk by hook and loop.

Make sure that the vents are aligned to the holes in the sandpaper.

Turn the sander on to understand how it works.

You will notice that it jitters around in an elliptical motion and also spins at the same time.

The two key uses are coarse grit sanding and fine-grit sanding.

STEP 1: Coarse-grit sanding.

To illustrate the effect of the sanding, separate your workpiece between the surface that will be sanded and the unpolished surface.

Draw an undulating line on the side that will be polished to serve as a guide to ensure uniformity.

Place the sander on the surface before you turn it on.

Grip it with both hands if needed and simply guide it along the grain, moving roughly 30 cms or a foot every 10 seconds.

Do not apply too much pressure and let the weight of the sander do the job.

Make sure that the sander doesn't tip over the edge, to avoid damaging the workpiece.

STEP 2: Fine-grit sanding.

Remove the coarse-grit sand paper and fix a medium-grit pad in its place.

Make sure that you align the dust extraction holes on the pad to those on the paper.

Pass over the entire surface, working along with the grain.

Brush the dust and make yet another pass, this time using fine grit sandpaper.

Once you have covered the entire surface, brush away the dust from the workpiece and the sander.

Vacuum and thoroughly clean your work place as the fine dust produced is harmful to health.

You now know how to use a random oribtal sander.
