In this video you will learn how to maintain your masonry tools.

A Mason's tools need to be systematically inspected for damages so that work is efficient and workers are not endangered. It is essential to clean your tools at the end of every working day.

Begin by collecting all your tools near a bucket of water.

The metal float needs to be dipped in the water and scrubbed with the metal brush before any mortar on its surface dries completely.

To clean the trowel, dip it into the water and use the metal brush to scrub it clean of dry mortar. Wash it repeatedly until it is clean.

The Chisel also needs to be dipped in water. Scrub it with the metal brush to get rid of any debris or dust stuck to it before rinsing it.

Wash the wooden float thoroughly by first immersing it entirely in the water. Use a sponge to scrub the surface of the wooden float clean.

It is important that all parts of the wooden float are equally soaked so that the wood swells uniformly.

To clean the Straightedge, hold it vertically with one end dipped in water and use your hand to wash and wipe the surface. If there is any mortar stuck on it’s surface, use the metal brush alternately washing off particulate matter. Take extra care while handling the straight edge.

To clean the mortar pan, hold it over the mouth of the bucket and use your hand to apply water and rinse it thoroughly. Use the metal brush to scrub away any dried bits of mortar.

To clean the shovel use the metal brush to remove any mortar particles or debris. Hold its blade over the bucket and rinse it with your hand.

Once all the tools are washed, use a clean rag to wipe them dry so that the metal surfaces do not get corroded.

Inspect all parts of the tools for splinters, breaks and cracks. Ensure that there are no signs of corrosion in the metal parts.

When attempting to remove rust, wear safety gloves and goggles. Apply or spray an anti-corrosive fluid in the corroded area.

You have now learned to maintain your masonry tools.
