In this video, you will learn how to wax a piece of furniture with a paintbrush.

To do this, you will need:

A flat 5cm paintbrush,

A wallpaper brush,

And a cotton rag or cloth.

You will also need: a pot of wax.

There are four steps to this process, which we will explain to you.

Step 1: Applying the wax

We have chosen to apply the wax with a brush for more precision.

Load your brush by drawing it in a semicircle inside the pot of wax.

Apply the wax using the cross-coat application technique.

For the first coat, apply the wax perpendicular to the direction of the wood grain.

In this example, from left to right.

Then, apply a second coat in the same direction as the wood grain.

In this example, from top to bottom.

If you're not sure how to tell the direction of the wood grain, take a look at our video on the Learning the Basics

Work systematically across each surface of the furniture.

Waxing a piece of furniture helps:

Protect the wood from termites, dust and humidity;

Smooth the wood;

Change the colour tone of the piece, if you're using a tinted, coloured, wax.

STEP 2: Spreading the wax

To spread the wax, run a wallpaper brush over the furniture, again following the cross-coat method.

Don't press down on the wood, but rather, brush lightly over it, as if you were using a duster.

You could also use a short-handled brush for this step

This step helps get rid of any brush strokes from the application, spreading the wax uniformly and getting rid of any excess.

Do this for the whole piece, then leave the wax to dry for two hours.

STEP 3: Polishing

Buff the surface with the cotton rag or cloth in small rounded movements until it shines.

The movement should be light and delicate, just brushing the surface.

If you press down too hard with the rag, you might remove some of the wax.

If the rag starts changing colour, this means you're pressing too hard.

You've finished polishing an area when it is no longer sticky to the touch.

For an even better shine, make small rounded movements with your bare palm over the parts which are still sticky.

Use this technique systematically over each area of the piece.

You now know how to wax furniture with a brush.
