In this video you will learn how to stitch a Tulle Overlay for a skirt.

Watch the previous video to learn how to stitch the Inner layer.

Spread the two sheets of tulle cut for the overlay on top of the table.

Make sure that their edges are aligned.

Remember that the tension of the thread needs to be right to stitch the sheer woven tulle fabric.

Place the 40 inch sides of the two pieces under the needle and start stitching a quarter of an inch from the edge.

Proceed carefully, adjusting the two layers with a firm hold so that their edges stay aligned.

Keep in mind that making a reverse stitch on sheers can cause the thread to jam and so it needs to be avoided.

Ensure that you have a uniform stitch and then repeat the process on the opposite side.

Now that the front and back overlay pieces have been joint at the side seams, we shall go on to make a hem.

To do this, hold a single layer of the overlay along the raw edge and make a double fold as shown.

Place the double fold under the needle and start stitching it down as a hem.

Extend the hem all along the edge.

Stitch past the point where you began before trailing off the edge and cutting the thread.

Make sure that the hem has been sewn uniformly and the material is secure.

Spread out the overlay on the table.

Place the inner layer within the overlay and open it up into its position, as shown.

Make sure that the inner layer is spread out flat inside the overlay, side seams aligned.

The extra length of the overlay will be gathered.

Using a piece of chalk, mark a series of points set three inches apart along the upper edge of the fabric, starting with the side seam.

Once this is done, align the side seam of the inner layer with that of the overlay and pin them together.

Flatten the overlay and the inner layer before pinning the second set of side seams.

Now, make a set of test gathers with the edge of the overlay.

Distribute the gathers evenly between the 3-inch points.

Once this is done, pin the gathers down at each point, as shown.

Make sure the gathers are uniform.

Now, place the edge under the needle and start stitching the gathers in place, half an inch from the edge.

Keep removing the pins as the approach the needle.

When you cross the starting point, trail off the edge and cut the thread.

You have now learnt how to stitch the overlay of a tulle skirt.

To learn how to gather both layers onto the waistband, watch the next video.
