In this video, you will learn how to choose the right light bulb.

To fully enjoy an agreeable interior, a few rules on lighting need to be respected. Each room needs a specific type of light bulb.

To choose the right light bulb, we will be using an LED light bulb, an incandescent light bulb, a halogen light bulb, a fluorescent tube, and the packaging for these lights.

This presentation is made in five steps that we will describe.

STEP 1: COMPARE THE CONSUMPTION RATES FOR THE LIGHT BULBS

STEP 1: COMPARE THE CONSUMPTION RATES FOR THE LIGHT BULBS

Identify the wattage indicated on the packaging for the light bulb. The higher the wattage, the more energy the light bulb consumes.

LEDs make it possible to save up to 80% in energy in comparison with an incandescent light bulb.

The fluorescent tube also saves energy in comparison with an incandescent light bulb.

STEP 2: COMPARE THE LIFE SPAN

STEP 2: COMPARE THE LIFE SPAN

An LED has a long life span: 10,000 to 30,000 hours of lighting, or a minimum 10 years.

A fluorescent tube provides about 12,000 hours of light.

An eco-halogen light bulb has a life span of between 1 and 2 years. It provides 3 times as much light as a traditional halogen bulb.

An incandescent light bulb has a much lower life expectancy, of between only 1,000 and 1,500 hours.

STEP 3: COMPARE THE LIGHT OUTPUT

STEP 3: COMPARE THE LIGHT OUTPUT

The efficiency of a light bulb is expressed in Lumens per Watt.

The higher the number of Lumens, the more efficient the light bulb’s light output. This information is found on the light bulb’s packaging.

In comparison with an incandescent light bulb, the light output efficiency of a LED is 4 times higher.

Light bulbs are also ranked in terms of their energy consumption. One part of the wattage consumed by a light is not used for lighting but is lost in heat. The energy efficiency is ranked from A (the best performance) to E (the worst performance)

STEP 4: COMPARE THE COLOR

STEP 4: COMPARE THE COLOR

The temperature of the color emitted varies from a very cold white to warmer colors closer to that of the sun.

For living areas a warmer color is preferable. For workspaces, choose a whiter light.

STEP 5: COMPARE THE COST

STEP 5: COMPARE THE COST

An LED costs almost 20 times more than an incandescent light bulb at the time of purchase. This price difference is amortized through savings in energy consumption.

You now know how to choose a light bulb.
