How to orientate yourself using a map and a compass

In this video, you're going to learn how to orientate yourself with the help of a map and a compass.

Using the compass is straightforward; we're going to go through it step by step.

The technique is quick and precise.

To orientate yourself using a map and a compass, all you need to do is match the map with your surroundings so that everything to your left is also to your left on the map. The same goes for all directions.

Use a baseplate compass; it's the only kind that you can use to orientate yourself while hiking.

To orientate yourself using a map and compass, remember these three steps: place the compass on the map, calibrate the compass, and then turn everything together

Firstly, place the compass on the map.

Put the compass along one of the longitude lines, with the orientating arrow pointing towards the top of the map.

Keep your map flat in front of you. It's not necessary to unfold it completely.

As for every time you use a compass, make sure that the map is completely flat, and that you're not anywhere near bits of metal or magnetic fields, as that prevents the compass from working properly.

Secondly, calibrate the compass. Turn the dial so that 'North' aligns with the direction of travel arrow., pointing towards the top of the map.

Thirdly, turn everything around together

Keeping the compass exactly on the longitude line, turn everything until the needle is pointing to North on the dial, the same way as the direction of travel arrow.

Now your map is orientated, it matches up with what you can see around you. When walking on a path or a track, you can easily check your position on a map.

To sum it all up, to orientate yourself with a map and a compass, place the compass on the map, calibrate it, and turn everything until the needle is pointing to North. over to you!
