Breaststroke: Improve the entry of your head and shoulders into the water

In this video, you'll learn how to improve the entry of your head and shoulders into the water when you're doing breaststroke. It's an essential step towards having a good swimming technique.

For this exercise, you'll need a pull-buoy

When doing breaststroke, you should plunge your head underwater so that you don't injure your neck or your back. We'll divide this video into two steps; submerging your shoulders, and improving the entry of your head into the water

Firstly, entering your shoulders into the water

Put a pull-buoy between your legs and lie on your stomach

Make breaststroke movements with your arms; thrusting them forward, then pulling them back

With each movement, completely submerge your shoulders

Do this for a few lengths

This exercise teaches you how to properly submerge your shoulders in the water

Next, improving the entry of your head into the water. This exercise teachers you how to properly submerge your head in the water

Stay lying on your front in the same position

Submerge your head by your chin first,to lower water resistance. Relax the muscles in your neck and shoulders

Kick your legs and let yourself glide underwater, your head submerged and your arms out in front of you

Repeat this as many times as you like

To improve the entry of your head and shoulders in the water, first practise submerging your shoulders, then your head, by your chin first. Over to you!
