GETTING YOUR RUCK SACK READY FOR A HIKE

In this video, you will learn how to get your ruck sack ready for a hike. It is much better for your back and shoulders if your bag is packed properly, you will be less likely to lose your balance and it will be easier for you to find what you are looking for quickly.

To organise you bag properly, there are three rules to remember: your choice of bag, balancing the weight and practicalities.

First of all, your choice of bag. In general, a 20 litre bag is enough for a hike lasting only a few hours. For a hike any longer than 4 hours, use a 30 to 40 litre bag.

Choose your bag according to the equipment you are taking with you. You can always borrow different sized bags from friends.

Second of all, balance. If possible your bag should be as compact and evenly balanced out as possible. The basic rule is to spread about 80% of the weight around the pelvic area and 20% on the shoulders.

Put the heavy objects in the side of the bag close to your back and the lighter items towards the outside. Balance out the weight between the left and right side of the bag.

The total weight of the bag should not be more than 10% of your body weight for a short hike (only a few hours) and no more than 15% of your body weight for a day long hike.

Thirdly, practicalities. The principle is easy: always keep at hand the items you will most frequently need.

Put your change of clothes at the bottom of the bag, precious items in a zip-lock bag hidden away, protective clothing at the top of the bag, snacks and water within easy access ie. at the side of the bag.

Keep your map and compass within easy reach.

Before setting off, carry your bag for a few minutes to check it is comfortable and stable.

In short, when preparing your bag, choose a suitable ruck sack, balance out the weight of the material and organise it according to what you most frequently need access to .
