In this tutorial, we will learn how to build a double compost bin from recyclable pallets.
This construction has two compartments, it ensures the availability of regular supplies of compost. As the organic matter decomposes in the first bin, you can start a second heap in the other bin by its side. The stages of decomposition being staggered, you can make the most of mature compost throughout the whole year.
In this example, we will use 5 pallets of identical size, 4 wooden planks of 15 centimeters wide (6 inches), 2 centimeters (~1 inch) thick and 3 meters in length (6.5 feet), screws, brackets, and fixing plates.

We will also need a measuring tape, a drill/driver and a saw.

(To begin, choose a location sheltered form sun and wind).
Position two pallets at right angles to each other. Attach brackets connecting the pallets at their top and bottom corners.
Attach 2 brackets to each joint
Insert screws into the section of cubic wood between the two slats of the pallets.
Place the third pallet at a right angle and assemble it with the brackets in the same manner.
Screw the fourth pallet in line with the back.
Finally, add the last pallet.
Attach the fixing plates on the back of the bins to strengthen the construction.
Attach 8 fixing plates on the back.
We will now add a wooden frame to reinforce the bins and make them look better.
Take the total width, height and length measurements.
Cut the planks to the desired dimensions.
Then, screw them on the edges of the bins.
The bin is now ready to receive your vegetable waste.
Start your heap with a 10 cm layer of thick branches. On top of it stack layers of carbon-rich materials, like straw and dead leaves, and then layers of nitrogen-rich materials, like kitchen waste, grass clippings, comfrey or nettle leaves. Add water between each layer to facilitate the decomposition.
Once the first bin is full, you can start filling the second.
