This short tutorial will teach you to use a rasp in woodworking.

The content presented here is meant to help you grasp the basics of woodworking.

The rasp is used to loosen up the grain for intensive shaping. For finer work, watch the next video on How to Use a File.

The step-by-step instructions will show you when and how to use a rasp in your woodwork projects to ensure great results.

In this video you will learn how to use a rasp.

A rasp is principally used for the preliminary rough shaping of wood which is later finished with a plane, a file, a sanding stick, or sandpaper.

The rasp removes wood very quickly without a risk of tearout.

A rasp has a handle and a bar of steel with teeth.

The teeth are coarse for quick removal of wood.

A rasp is a two handed tool.

Hold the handle with one hand and the edge of the steel bar with the other.

Apply considerable pressure and push the rasp along the edge of the wood.

Continue rasping with a forward motion.

When you come back, make sure to lift the rasp.

As you approach the layout line switch to a finer tool, a plane, a spokeshave or sandpaper.

If you have to rasp against the grain, do not do it too agressively as you can end up chipping up the wood.

You can use the rasp to shape the edges of a workpiece.

The angle of the rasp should be adjuted according to the work required.

For the end grain, removing wood with a rasp can be tricky.

Ligthly rasp the edges so that the end grain doesn't splinter when you rasp.

Rasp the end grain surface slowly.

The rasp can be used for curved work.

This requires good coordination between both hands.

The motion of the rasp here will be more of a sweeping action than a a series of short strokes.

As you go over the curved surface, rotate the rasp anti-clockwise without interupting the forward motion of the hand holding the bar.

When you roll the rasp, there is a flat forward cutting motion.

Rotate the handle to get the smoothing action.

When you rotate the rasp, the entire suface of the rasp is used instead of one particular part.

If the rasp is really coarse, you can tape the end of the steel bar to protect your fingers.
