Coarse Aggregates are irregular chunks of rock or stone that are crushed or broken down to a range of sizes, depending on their grade. In masonry, they are mostly used to prepare concrete. Gravel, Pebble and stones like granite and sandstone are commonly used Coarse Aggregates.
There are a few observations that can be made to ascertain if a coarse aggregate is suitable for your purpose.
Make sure there is no trace of organic impurities, clay or silt present in the aggregate.
Coarse Aggregates can be classified into three broad categories depending on their size:
Small Coarse Aggregates range between 4.75 and 20 millimeters.
Medium Coarse Aggregates range between 20 and 40 millimeters.
Large Coarse Aggregates range between 40 and 80 millimeters.
To make concrete drop the coarse aggregate into the mortar and turn the mixture with a hoe until the coarse aggregate is uniformly blended into the mortar. Consult the mix design and method statement to find the proportion of materials required for the specific application. The mix should not be too stiff that it is difficult to work with or too sloppy that the water separates.
