In this video, we are going to learn how to choose the right kind of pallet for your upcycling or DIY projects
You can normally find two main types of pallet:
Unmarked pallets come in varying sizes, they tend to be lighter and much easier to dismantle compared to EUR EPAL (Europallet) Pallets, and are therefore not as strong as them either.
You can find pallets in certain chains of DIY stores, in construction sites and certain businesses
EUR EPAL (Europallets) Pallets are stronger and more tricky to dismantle than other types
They have a standardised size and measure 80cm (31.5in) in width by 120cm (47.2in) in length
EUR EPAL Pallets will have always been treated to avoid the spreading of insects and harmful fungi when shipped or delivered between countries
In order to be sure that your pallets are not harbouring such potentially dangerous pests or fungi, which could be detrimental to your health, it's important to know how to read their labels
The IPPC logo indicates that the wood has been treated following international phytosanitary guidelines. However this doesn't mean that the pallet has also been chemically treated.
To find this out, look for the label "HT" which indicates that the wood has been heat-treated so as to eliminate all pathogens.
This is the only form of non-polluting, phytosanitary treatment authorised by the European Union today.
If the pallet has these labels, you can be sure that it will be safe for use
Careful, if the pallet has the label "MB" stamped onto it, that means that it has been treated with Methyl Bromide, in which case you shouldn't use it for your DIY projects - and you certainly shouldn't burn it.
EUR EPAL pallets are usually registered, you can find them from official pallet vendors.
Avoid using or repurposing pallets that have been stained or varnished for your DIY projects since these may contain traces of products which are harmful to your health
