In this video you'll learn how to secure your home in order to prepare for a major disaster.

Make sure your house number is clearly displayed so that the emergency services can easily find you

Keep the hallways and entries clear to faciliate evacuation.

Set up smoke detectors in the recommended locations.

Get a fire extinguisher and learn how and when to use it. Have it checked regularly.

Familiarise yourself with the functioning of the water, electricity and gas supplies, and learn to turn them off at the mains by yourself if necessary.

Natural gas can cause explosions and fires in houses

Identify the mains gas supply

If you smell gas, hear a leak, or notice that a gas pipe is cracked, immediately turn off the gas supply and open all windows.

If you suspect a gas leak, avoid lighting any spark or flame.

Never use matches, lighters or candles.

And do not use the lightswitches nor the switches of any electric device.

Electrocutions can result from direct contact with electric wires or from any object in contact with exposed wires.

Locate the electricity supply at the mains, which can be located in different places depending on the type of building you live in.

Turn off the electricty as fast as you can in case of an accident or flood

Turn off the water supply of your home at the mains if authorities recommend so.

Turn off the main water supply if you leave your home for several days.

Stock enough food and water for the entire family and any pets to last for 3 days.

The best food products for this type of situation are the ones that do not need refrigerating or cooking, and are low in salt

Examples: Canned fruit and vegetables, jams, dry cakes, cereals, pastas and rice, dry fruits, canned meat, fruit juices, powdered milk et cetera...

Think of the specific dietary and medicals needs of your family members, such as allergies....

Stock 3 litres of water for each person and per day. This will suffice for common hydration needs

10 litres a day per person is what is necessary to be able to cook and maintain basic hygiene
